The Illinois State Police is investigating an incident from early Thursday on the McKinley Bridge in Venice. A female suspect allegedly tried to run down a police officer during a traffic stop and was shot by the officer. The woman is expected to recover from her injuries, but is also facing criminal charges as early as today.
Police say the incident took place just before 3am Thursday when the officer attempted a traffic stop near the entrance to the bridge on Route 3. The driver, a 30-year-old female from St. Louis County, continued onto the bridge at a low rate of speed but the officer eventually used his vehicle to pin her in, then exited his vehicle with his weapon drawn. The driver then allegedly drove her vehicle toward the officer, sideswiping him, and that’s when the officer fired several shots at the driver. State Police say the woman was struck once and the officer administered first aid until paramedics arrived.
