A police officer from Carbondale remains in the hospital after being shot by a suspect on Sunday night. The unnamed officer is in serious but stable condition following surgery at a St. Louis hospital on Monday. Police continue to search for a suspect.
Carbondale Police Chief Jeff Grubbs say officers responded late Sunday night after hearing shots fired and witnessed a tan four-door car leaving the area and followed it. A pursuit began when the vehicle refused to stop and then someone in the car fired shots at the officers striking a patrol car and the officer behind the wheel. No shots were fired by police. The suspect vehicle escaped and police believe there could be two persons of interest in the case. The car was recovered yesterday in nearby Williamson County and had been burned. The police chief in Carbondale says at least a $10,000 reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person responsible for shooting the officer. The injured officer has reportedly been on the force for three years.
