A group representing obstetricians and gynecologists is opposed to a bill they say will allow for less qualified midwives in Illinois. Maura Quinlan from Illinois’ section of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists says the bill filed last month to create the Home Birth Safety Act is a step closer to being something they can support but it’s not quite there yet.

Quinlan says safety should be common sense. The latest version of the measure is different than previous failed attempts because it brings language in line with standards from the International Federation of Midwifery (mid-WHIF-ery), according to the Coalition for Illinois Midwifery, which supports the bill. The Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation says Illinois doesn’t license midwives but advanced practice nurses can be licensed if they follow certain requirements.
