One of the more common reasons couples in abusive relationships get back together around this time of year is because the aggressor promises his or her victim Christmas for the kids. It is this weight the Oasis Women's Center hopes to lift off the shoulders of the abused with their annual Christmas Project, in which gifts are provided, thereby ending the reliance on the abuser. The project recently kicked off its 2012 campaign.
MargaretteTruschell, Executive Director at the center, says this not only breaks the chains that keep people in abusive relationships, but it does so with dignity.
She says the kids write a letter to Santa, as do the mothers, and then people in the community adopt those letters and shop for the things on the list. Secret Santa's can be individuals, families, organizations or businesses. You can find out more by calling Truschell at 465-1978.
