Putting a loved one into a nursing home – even a good one –can be a difficult decision. And a retired nursing home administrator who lives near Springfield is trying to make those homes better. Lester Robertson of Auburn, Ill., is touring the state to visit nursing homes and determine how regulations can be streamlined.

He says the nursing homes are predisposed to prioritize paperwork over people, leading to what he calls a “C. Y. A” attitude – “cover your backside.” Robertson says he hopes lawmakers can put something together soon, though “We don’t believe this to be a political issue,” he says, “nor do we believe it to be a budgetary issue. This is a compassionate issue of whether we want to be able to afford more one-on-one time with the residents. They deserve it.”
