The suspense, not that there was any, is over. The 2012 election winners in Illinois are Barack Obama for president, and Joe Biden for vice president. The Electoral College Monday validated the November results of the popular election, with Illinois’ exercise taking place in the state Senate chamber. Secretary of State Jesse White convened the college and said afterward that the balloting is more than a formality.

“When the people came to the polling place to vote, they were not voting for the president of the United States. They were really voting for the electors,” said White, “and the electors have an opportunity to validate the election process, and we’re proud of the fact that here in Illinois, we cast 20 ballots in support of President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden.” Illinois has 20 electoral votes, the total of members of Congress from the state, including U. S. senators.
