It appears that an Illinois congressman is not in line to be the next U.S. ambassador to the Vatican. U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-Western Springs, pictured) says his name was floated as a possibility by Vatican expert and papal biographer John Allen. “This is someone who is a Vatican watcher who understands American politics and they (sic) were looking at who is a Democrat out there who would be acceptable to the Vatican, and I’m honored that they considered that I would be someone that the Vatican would accept in that role of ambassador,” he said.

Lipinski was apparently mentioned because he’s a Democrat who’s anti-abortion, but months have passed and his phone hasn’t rung, so Lipinski says it appears it isn’t happening, and he’s happy serving the people of Illinois in Congress. The position has been vacant since Miguel Diaz resigned in November.
