The bright orange glow over the night sky and a loud bang prompted several people to ask what's going on at the Wood River Refinery Monday night. The glow and the noise was the result of the refinery doing some regular planned maintenance on one of its units, according to a company spokesman. As a result, the flaring technique was put into play, according to refinery spokesman Melissa Erker.
She says they needed to depressure the unit a little bit faster than normal.
She says there will be no impact on the health or well-being of anyone in the vicinity. Erker reminds that they have partnered with all area emergency responders, and assures that if there were ever any danger to the community, they would leap into action to make sure notification happened immediately.
