No one was injured when a tugboat sank just north of the Lewis and Clark Confluence Tower in Hartford Friday morning. The Alton Fire Department was dispatched to respond on Marine 1 just after 10 a.m. after the U.S. Coast Guard received word that the vessel was taking on water. When firefighters arrived on scene the boat had completely sank with the passengers able to disembark without injury.
Emergency crews from the Alton Fire Department and Phillips 66 remained on scene for several hours after the initial call to mitigate any environmental hazards caused by the sunken vessel, which was leaking gas and oil. Officials say the spill was contained and that there will be no threat to human life.
