Firefighters from four area departments battled an apartment building fire in Godfrey on Tuesday afternoon.  No one was injured, as occupants of one apartment were able to escape before rescuers arrived.  The fire broke out at a building in the Woodbury Manor Apartments on Humbert Road just east of North Alby Street.

There’s no word on the exact cause of the fire, which remains under investigation.  The 9-1-1 call went out around 3:20pm yesterday, with Godfrey and Fosterburg firefighters being dispatched first.  A mutual aid call was then placed for Alton and Brighton to assist in battling the fire that fortunately did not spread to other nearby buildings.  While no humans were injured, several pets were rescued from the smoke and flames.  The Madison County Sheriff’s Department closed off a section of Humbert Road while fire crews were on the scene.  The QEM Fire Department assisted as backup at the Godfrey fire stations.
