Goodbye, No Child Left Behind, and don't let the door hit you on your way out.
Illinois Federation of Teachers president Dan Montgomery was in Washington Thursday to watch President Obama sign that unfavorite law's successor, the Every Student Succeeds Act, or ESSA.
“Teachers will tell you – I hear it time and again,” Montgomery says, “the joy and creativity of teaching has been sapped and taken out, and that's what we want to return; because that means there's joy and creativity in learning, and that's the most important thing.”

Montgomery says ESSA gives states more flexibility and discourages vouchers. He criticizes what he calls the old “test-and-punish” system and adds it makes no sense to try to solve education's problems by closing schools, when nobody suggests we close hospitals or police stations when there are problems in the medical and law enforcement fields.
