Even in a world that includes chats, texts, and Skype, there is room for letters from home.  “I very clearly remember Mother’s Day,” says Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs director Erica Borggren of her time in Baghdad a few years back.

“My son was less than 2 years old, so he didn’t have very high-end artistic drawings or writings, but the fact is that I remember that one-page ‘drawing,’ if you can call it that, along with a DVD that my husband had made that arrived in the mail. Tough day, but lots of service members go through those tough days.”  Borggren spoke at the introduction of the latest version of the Purple Heart postage stamp at the Illinois State Military Museum in Springfield.
