The move of the downtown Alton Post Office to the Homer Adams Parkway is expected later this year. Remodeling work finally began on Monday at the former Piasa Lincoln Mercury car dealership to transform it into the new post office. Completion is expected later this summer.
Ameren owns the current downtown post office property on Belle Street, and the company is not renewing the lease that expires on May 31. The U.S. Postal Service says once the downtown location closes, postal customers will have to use the post offices in Upper Alton on Main Street or the location at Alton Square until the new main post office is completed. No word yet on the future of those locations once the new post office opens. Ameren plans to tear down the current downtown post office building and then remediate the property.
