The Illinois Department of Agriculture has named Woodworth, a former newspaper reporter who joined the fair's staff in 1999, to succeed John Ridenour, Jr., who resigned to join his family's business. Woodworth has most recently been working with entertainment and sponsorships for the Southern Illinois fair, which this year is Aug. 22 to Sept. 1.

That's not the only time of activity, though. “We have over 330 events on the fairgrounds throughout the year,” says Woodworth. “There are things going on at the fairgrounds almost every day.” The event this weekend, though, a sprint car race, succumbed to the weather. Woodworth, 47, is a lifelong Southern Illinoisan and lives in West Frankfort.
