It may not seem newsworthy, but if you’ve ever had to drop off mail from your car in downtown Alton, it’s been a challenge from behind the wheel. There’s a new mailbox in downtown Alton, and it’s on the driver’s side of the vehicle.
Currently, the U.S. Post Office on Belle Street has a drop box on the same side of the road, but it’s on the passenger side, making it difficult for drivers who either have to lean across the seat, park and get out, or drive against traffic to get to the box. Alton Main Street credits Christian Hill neighbors and downtown Alton businesses and residents who finally convinced the USPS to install a new drive up box in Sugar Alley, just beyond the visitor’s center.
