Several new laws proposed by Attorney General Lisa Madigan's office became law at the stroke of midnight, January 1.  One measure prohibits doctors and hospitals from demanding payment from crime victims until the victim receives compensation from the state, according to Madigan spokesman Annie Thompson.

Another law pushed by Madigan's office allows nursing home residents and their families to purchase and install video cameras for their rooms to ensure the resident is getting proper care.
