State Representative Dan Beiser saw two pieces of legislation he supported become laws with the start of the new year. The measures are designed to protect personal information and prevent identity theft by setting up rules and procedures when certain things occur.
While Beiser says the laws are a step in the right direction, he doesn’t believe this will completely eliminate identity theft.
Under the new laws, hospitals will no longer be able to print the full social security number on wristbands or on the outside of any files. The second measure establishes procedures that data collectors and state agencies must follow when a security breach occurs. It also increases increases penalties for entities that do not properly dispose of materials containing personal information
