A new Illinois law will help procrastinators. This is for those who wait until the last day or two to renew their vehicle registration. Secretary of State Jesse White says in the past, they would have to come in in person to get their new sticker on time.
“Some of them just say, well, I cannot get there because of one reason or another. So now they can go on our website and then pay for it. They will get a receipt, and they can use the receipt if they are stopped by a law enforcement officer,” White said.

The receipt will indicate the registration is paid for on-line but the new license plate sticker just hasn’t yet arrived in the mail. The receipt is also a defense against a ticket for expired registration that you might get while the car is parked. It’ll be good for 30 days.
White says the purpose of the new scheme is to keep routine renewals out of the Secretary of State’s office.
