There's good news for river watchers today in Alton. The National Weather Service has downgraded the forecast crest on the Mississippi River by about a foot and a half with the new crest at 34.5 feet on Tuesday which is about a foot and a half lower that the original prediction.
Dan Herkert, Chief of Staff and City Council Liason for the city of Alton, says they're pleased with the new crest prediction meaning there should be little additional impact on downtown businesses:
The crest on the Mississippi is taking place today at Grafton at 30.5 feet, about a half foot lower than expected.
