A proposal to allow repeat DUI offenders a second chance at legally driving again has advanced to the Illinois Senate floor. The bill would allow people who have four DUIs to apply for a restricted drivers permit. Current law allows three-time offenders to apply for the permit. Michael Geever lives in Kane County and has four DUIs. He recently lost his license after driving legally for years due to a technicality.

“Day to day, it’s thrown me upside down,” Geever testified today (Thursday). “I felt that I served my time, I paid my fines, I did what I had to do and I moved on with my life.” Geever says he could lose his job if this bill isn’t passed, and adds he isn’t the “drunken idiot” he was decades ago. As many as 5,000 people would be eligible to apply for a permit under the proposed change.
