State Representative Bill Haine believes that the southwestern part of the state could see major economic growth once the new Mississippi River Bridge is completed. The Alton Democrat recently toured the area that will carry I-70 over the river connecting Brooklyn to St. Louis and he says that this will create opportunities for businesses to expand.
The $630-million bridge is a joint project of Illinois and Missouri state governments. It will be built one mile north of the Martin Luther King Bridge. I-70 will be diverted to the new bridge and Illinois is investing in a new Route 3 interchange to create easier access to the bridge for northern Metro-East suburbs. The new bridge is scheduled to open in 2014.
