The holiday weekend provided a perfect backdrop for Governor Pat Quinn to sign new regulations for boater safety into law. Quinn signed the three measures on the shores of Lake Michigan Saturday. The regulations require safety courses, create rules for people on water tubes or skis and impose more severe penalties in cases of boater DUI.
Sixteen fatalities have been reported on Illinois waterways this year and state officials say these new laws may have prevented several of those deaths. The new regulations take effect on January 1, 2015.
