If your yard is a mess, the Alton City Council has passed an ordinance establishing a fee if the city has to clean up your property. The resolution would cover weeds over 4 inches tall, as well as overgrown grass. It does not address trash and junk accumulation.
Corporation Counselor Jim Schrempf says while he does not have exact numbers, he believes there are a number of properties each year that will be affected.
In other council action, the approval to purchase nearly $102,000 in new lighting and related equipment for Gordon Moore Park Field #1 was approved, with funding to come from the Madison County PEP Grant. The council also approved a contract for Central States Fireworks to produce this year's Independence Day holiday fireworks show at Riverfront Park on July 3, and approved an ordinance setting the prevailing rate of wages for laborers, workmen and mechanics in the Public Works Department.
