An Alton man will spend the rest of his life in prison following his guilty plea last December to the sexual assault of two young children.   30 year old Michael Burgund, formerly of the 4200 block of Aberdeen, originally turned himself into police in April of 2011, and admitted to the crimes.  In court, Burgund denied any responsibility in the case, but a videotaped confession was shown during the proceedings which apparently helped convince the jury.

Jurors met for about six hours before reaching a verdict on December 10.  Burgund was found guilty of six counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault against two female family members, ages 2 and 3, beginning in June 2008.  The maximum sentence for the Class X felony is normally 6-30 years, but based on the number of counts filed as well as the fact that he committed the crimes against two victims, Chief Judge Ann Callis sentenced Burgund to the mandatory natural life in prison.
