Natural gas prices for Ameren Illinois customers are about 25% lower than at this time last year, according to information from the Citizens Utility Board.  It’s running about 44-cents per therm, compared to 59-cents last year.  There are a couple of reasons for this, according to a CUB spokesman.

One is because of the fairly mild temperatures we have enjoyed so far.  Jim Chilsen tells The Big Z another is due to a controversial form of harvesting energy - fracking.

Once the colder weather comes this winter, Chilsen advises against overworking your heating system.  Concentrate on keeping comfortable the rooms you use the most.  Close doors to other rooms.  Close blinds as an extra layer of protection against icy night winds, but open them during the day so sunlight can help heat your home.
