Today is the national holiday to honor the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior. The federal holiday means most schools are shut down, and all local, state, county and federal government offices will be closed. Banks, credit unions, libraries and courts are closed across the state, and there is no mail delivery today.
Senior Services Plus in Alton will hold a commemoration today at the center on North Rodgers Avenue. The event runs from 11am until Noon and will feature Pastor David Goins of the Morning Star Missionary Baptist Church as the guest speaker. The event is free.
St. Louis is celebrating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The annual downtown march begins this morning at 9:45. Mayor Francis Slay is expected to address the crowd along with other dignitaries and elected officials. The St. Louis event is the second-largest MLK Day celebration in the country.
The Alton NAACP held it's 34th annual service to honor Dr. King on Sunday.
