As construction crews work to complete the New Mississippi River Bridge just north of downtown St. Louis, local politicians appear to drift further away from agreeing on a name for it. Both Illinois and Missouri legislators must agree on the name for the bridge. Republican State Representative Dwight Kay of Glen Carbon says that the bridge should be named the "Stan Musial Veterans' Memorial Bridge".
On the other side of the discussion is State Representative Jay Hoffman of Belleville, who supports naming the bridge for veterans' only. Hoffman says he will consider other options to honor Musial:
Hoffman introduced a measure in the Illinois House earlier this week that would name the the bridge the "Veterans' Memorial Bridge". It passed unanimously. However House Joint Resolution 24 doesn't mean the debate is over. The process could get even more complicated if the federal government gets involved since federal funding was used to build it.
