The 20 year anniversary of the Great Flood of '93 is coming up this summer. The Mississippi River overtook the Alton water plant and the city's sewer system on August 1, 1993. In advance of that historic date, the Alton Museum of History and Art in Upper Alton is marking the anniversary with a 3-D memorial, according to Alton Regional Convention and Visitor's Bureau President Brett Stawar.
The exhibit will run April 10 through June 30. The museum is located on the campus of the SIU Dental School on College Avenue. For more information, call 462-2763. Much has changed in the 20 years since the flood. He says when you take the relatively new bridge, lock and dam, National Great Rivers Research and Educational Center, and casino, Alton has a great number of attractions that were either not here, or completely different 20 years ago. There are other flood commemorations planned at other sites as well.
