One man is charged today with first degree murder in the death of his fiance's son. 24 year old Tavon K. Ludy and 27 year old Toria M. Coleman, both of the 2100 block of Rose Knoll Lane in Glen Carbon, have been charged in connection with the death of Torian Whittaker. Ludy is charged with first degree murder and aggravated battery to a child. Coleman is charged with endangering the life or health of a child.
The Madison County Sheriff's Department was called Sunday morning to the couples home where a child was found unresponsive. The boy was taken by ambulance to Anderson Hospital in Maryville where he was pronounced dead. During the course of the investigation, police say they discovered Ludy allegedly struck the child in the chest with his fist while he was trying to render discipline. Authorities say Ludy would routinely physically discipline the boy and his seven year old brother, and Coleman was aware of his actions. The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services took custody of the other brother. Both Ludy and Coleman are in custody and are being held in lieu of bond at the Madison County Jail.
