The latest mural to brighten downtown Alton was dedicated on Saturday. Alton Main Street spearheaded the effort to paint a wall near the site of its Farmer’s and Artisan’s Market at the corner of Piasa and 9th Streets. Several dozen onlookers and supporters gathered yesterday during the final market of the season to witness a ribbon cutting conducted by a group of local children, representing the nearly 100 that took part in painting a portion of the wall earlier this summer.
Artist Jeanie Cousley was recognized for her work in making the mural a reality, and a number of local volunteers and businesses were thanked. A special grant from Jacoby Arts Center helped fund a portion of the project. Saturday was the final market of the season, and the markets will return next June.
