The new Alton Multimodal Transportation Center 90% plan has received unanimous approval from the city’s plan commission, and will go before the full City Council next week.  Assuming the council approves the plan and is followed by approval by the Federal Railroad Administration, the first phase of construction could begin this summer.

Alton Development and Housing Director Greg Caffey tells The Big Z it appears many who opposed the project when it was first announced are warming to the idea.

Under the terms of the grant with the Federal Railroad Administration, the project must be completed by the end of 2016.  Phase 1 will be for the earthwork to prepare the land for the second phase, which includes construction of the access roads, platforms, and the building itself, according to Caffey.
