Spring is here, and warm weather is on the way. That means it’s motorcycle season, and the onset of the season comes with a safety warning.   Lt. Jeff Pfotenhauer of the Illinois State Police says last year, motorcycles represented 3 percent of registered vehicles in Illinois, but they gave us 16 percent of the fatalities. “This percentage is alarming, and should be a wakeup call to every motorcycle rider who violates the law and does not practice safe riding habits,” he said.

IDOT Chief of Staff Marva Boyd offers this advice to motorcycle riders: Don’t speed, don’t drive erratically, keep your machine in good mechanical condition, and wear protective clothing and a helmet.  IDOT offers motorcycle safety classes around the state. Last year, 20,361 riders participated. Private groups such as ABATE of Illinois also offer safety classes.
