Morrissey, WaltersThomas J. Morrissey of Marquette Catholic High School was awarded the Distinguished Achievement Award for “Excellence in Science” by the University of Missouri at St. Louis at an awards banquet on March 5th. Morrissey was one of sixty-four students from the St. Louis Metropolitan area that were recognized at the banquet.

Criteria for nomination included the student’s grade point average, participation in science related activities, number and type of science courses, standardized test scores, science related extracurricular activities, and volunteer work for, and previous recognition by, other organizations.

Morrissey is highly involved in science at Marquette and in the community, participating in Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering, Scholar Bowl, a volunteer Citizen Scientist for the State of Illinois, a member of Student Council, a member of the Junior Board for the Great Rivers Land Trust, and on the youth board of the Riverbend Growth Association. He is the son of Tom and Patty Morrissey of Alton.

John Walters, Chairman of the Science Department at Marquette, was present at the awards banquet and said, “We are proud of Tommy and his achievements thus far here at Marquette and in the community. His enthusiasm and interest in the sciences are commendable and I enjoy having him in my classroom.”
