An accident last Friday that killed an elderly couple from Bethalto remains under investigation. East Alton Police have released the names of the two other drivers who survived the multi-vehicle accident on the Berm Highway, but so far have not filed any charges or issued any tickets pending the outcome of toxicology test results and the conclusion of the crash investigation.
Police say a truck driven by 27 year old Elvanus Watts of Wood River was waiting to make a left turn from westbound Route 143 onto a small parking lot used mainly by local fisherman. His truck was struck from behind by a vehicle driven by 18 year old Kodijah Bledsoe of Fairview Heights and the truck was then pushed into oncoming traffic and struck by a minivan driven by 80 year old Leonard McCormick of Bethalto. He died at the scene, and his wife, 78 year old Shirley McCormick later died at a St. Louis hospital. Bledsoe and Watts were both taken to the hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and have been released.
