More farmer’s markets are letting customers use debit cards and link cards. According to the state only about 49 famer’s markets accept electronic payments but thanks to a grant program those numbers should increase by the end of the year. “It’s something where everyone is a winner,” said Lt. Gov. Sheila Simon. “We’re all eating healthier food, more money is staying in the State of Illinois.”

She says 90 percent of money spent on food in Illinois goes out of state. Farmer’s markets are a way to keep that money here at home.

As part of the deal, those taking advantage of the grant must also accept LINK cards.
