For the past week, about 5,500 Ameren customers in Godfrey have benefited from a temporary fix. It was last Thursday night when the Tolle Lane substation blew, thanks to the moisture from the heavy snow melting and getting into the equipment. The moisture refroze and expanded inside a conductor, which eventually blew up, according to an Ameren spokesman.
Brian Bretsch says they brought in a mobile substation Friday morning to get the power back on for most homes.

He says the plan is for crews to go through the substation thoroughly, and once it has been determined to have no issues, be brought back online. Bretsch says the current plan is to leave the mobile substation in place into March.
