Alton’s Tabernacle Baptist Church was filled Sunday as the community gathered to remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 35th annual Martin Luther King Commemoration Ceremony. The theme for the event was “Peace Be Still” according to Alton NAACP President James Gray. He tells The Big Z the theme was chosen as a way to recognize the right to peacefully demonstrate.

Rev. Diane D. Williams, pastor of the Alton Community Church of God was presented with the Alton NAACP’s Martin Luther King Jr. Award and Rev. Charles Stoner from Decatur, Illinois also delivered a speech duringt the ceremony on Sunday afternoon.
