The Reverend Martin Luther King, Junior, was honored Sunday in an annual event sponsored by the Alton branch of the NAACP.  It was the 33rd consecutive gathering to honor the late civil rights leader who the nation honors today with a national holiday.   The Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church was the host site for the event.

The Reverend Carla Campbell, founder and president of House of Refuge Ministries, was the guest speaker this year, and the program also included words from local NAACP board members, and music from the Riverbend Community Choir.  The annual Martin Luther King Award from the Alton NAACP was presented to Bishop Samuel White of the Monroe Memorial Church in Alton for his work with the Coalition of Concerned Citizens along with his experience as an author and speaker on social issues.
