State lawmakers remain divided on the issue of raising the state's minimum wage to $10 an hour. House Speaker Michael Madigan wants to give voters a say on the topic, his idea to place a non-binding referendum on the November ballot cleared a House committee by a 12 to 7 vote Friday.
The vote was along party lines. Republicans, like State Representative Dwight Kay, say the decision to raise the wage would hurt businesses.

If Madigan's idea does make it on to the ballot, it doesn't mean a hike is imminent. Since it's a non-binding resolution, lawmakers would not be required to act, even if it gets enough support from voters.
