The underlying problem behind the former sinkhole at Alton Middle School is being fixed, and work is progressing nicely, according to one school district official. The actual hole was fixed last year, but the problem of a collapsed culvert that precipitated the hole, was likely part of an aging infrastructure. The district and the city entered into an agreement to tackle the project earlier this year.
School District Director of Financial Services Chris Norman tells The Big Z the work is going well.

A 50 / 50 split in cost will address repair of the storm sewer line that runs underneath the parking lot at the school. Once the sewer work is done, the district will resurface the entire parking lot, hopefully in time for school to begin next fall according to Norman.
