The Madison County Coroner’s office says a recent meningitis death poses no immediate health threat. 30-year-old Elizabeth I. Schreck of Durham, Missouri was in Highland on April 14th for a seminar when she died. The Madison County Health Department was contacted and determined this strain of meningitis is not considered communicable to others.
Schreck had begun complaining of a headache as well as neck and back pain during the seminar. The lab results indicate streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria caused the meningitis. There are no recommendations for preventative treatment due to this determination.
