A Jersey County landowner has revealed his intent to pursue a plan to locate a medical marijuana cultivation center in the county. Where the facilities will be located is in the state’s hands, and Jersey County Board members were advised of the plan recently. The state will issue 21 permits for cultivation centers – or grow operations - and 60 dispensary permits, which will be the sole legal retailers for medical marijuana.
Since the board has no zoning restrictions in place for land under its jurisdiction, a facility could go nearly anywhere if the state chooses to do grant a permit. The county’s Legislative Committee will study the issue and report back in July if there is anything the board needs to do to prepare for the possibility. John Shourd owns the land in question, which is located near Fieldon. The state will be issuing one cultivation center permit for each of its Illinois State Police districts.
