Wood River Mayor Fred Ufert has died.  He had been hospitalized in serious but stable condition at a St. Louis Hospital after undergoing a medical procedure Monday night.  A spokesman for the city says he passed away at 8:30am Wednesday.

Ufert was taken to OSF St. Anthony’s Health Center after complaining of severe back pain Monday night.  After testing revealed an aortic aneurysm, Ufert was transported to Barnes Jewish Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery to address the issue.

Ufert had spent 17 years as an elected official in Wood River, first elected to the city council in 1999, where he served until he was elected mayor in 2006.  Ufert was 65 years old.  Councilwoman Cheryl Maguire will serve as mayor pro tem until the Wood River City Council meets again on April 6.  At that time, the council could select her to serve the remainer of Ufert's term, which expires in April 2017.  Funeral arrangements for Ufert are pending.
