A Godfrey man's death has been ruled an accident by the Madison County Coroner, closing the case that began as a missing person and ended in tragedy. 36 year old Charles "Chad" Roe was apparently fascinated with heavy machinery and authorities believe he went to the Alby Quarry the evening of Ash Wednesday to watch machinery, and fell to his death.
Several area law enforcement agencies were called upon to search for Roe, who had left home the evening of February 22 to attend a church service but never returned. His family reported him missing the next day and a search turned up his vehicle parked at St. Anthony's Hospital. Roe's body was discovered by a television news helicopter covering the progress of the search at the bottom of a quarry wall on February 24. The coroner's report says there was no foul play involved, and considers the case closed.
