A Madison County Grand Jury has returned a decision in the case of a man who died after a fight outside a bar in Rosewood Heights. No charges will be filed in the death of 49 year old Randy Baze of East Alton who was injured in a fight with another man on May 16 on the parking lot of the Airliner Bar and Grill. Authorities have never identified the other man involved in the fight and the grand jury indicated there was not enough evidence in the case for prosecutors to pursue charges.
The unidentified man was never arrested in connection with the case. The Madison County Sheriff's Department interviewed that man, as well as another witness, and determined Baze got into a verbal altercation with the second man and threw the first punch when the two were outside the bar. The second man punched back once, and Baze fell to the ground striking his head. Authorities say Baze had a blood alcohol level four times the legal limit of intoxication, but it's not known if the other man had been drinking. Baze was hospitalized for several weeks following the fight and died on July 23. Police say the two men did not know each other prior to that night, and met through a mutual friend on the night of the incident.
