Weapon recovered by policeIllinois State Police and the Alton Police Department are investigating an officer involved shooting.   Alton Police report an officer was responding to the report of a man with a gun in the area of McClure and Harriett Streets Tuesday afternoon when the suspect was confronted, refused an officers orders and reached for a weapon in his waistband, and was shot and injured by the officer.  The weapon turned out to be an airsoft type handgun.

According to Alton Police public Information Officer Emily Hejna, an officer responding to the call located the suspect and ordered him several times to the ground.  The suspect refused to comply, according to police, and instead drew a gun from his waistband.  The officer shot the suspect who was then transported to Alton Memorial Hospital and later to a St. Louis hospital in critical condition.

The man's  name and age have not been released.  The officer was not injured, but as part of department policy, the officer is on paid leave during the investigation and evidence in the case will be presented to the Madison County State's Attorney's Office for review.
