It's a six year prison sentence for an Alton man who was convicted earlier this year of aggravated DUI in a case involving a van and a bicycle. 54 year old Allen H. Cordes must serve at least 85-percent of his sentence for driving drunk into a bicycle ridden by 50 year old James Allen Stewart who died at the scene along Broadway near Milton Road in April 2013.
Authorities say Cordes had a blood alcohol level of point-1-2 at the time of the incident. He had two previous DUI convictions and two previous arrests for the same offense. Cordes was driving his van when he struck Stewart along Broadway near Come-In-Place which connects to Milton Road. Stewart was also under the influence when he died, but prosecutors pointed out to the judge that it was Cordes who was operating a motor vehicle at the time. He could have faced up to 7 years in jail.
