An Alton man has been sentenced to 22 years in prison for a shooting incident outside a local school two years ago.  In June, 28-year-old Charles Thomas was found guilty of aggravated discharge of a firearm within 1000 feet of a school following the shooting near Lovejoy School in February 2014.

Prosecutors say Thomas fired shots at another man who was walking down Tremont Street while students were in session at Lovejoy, forcing the school to go on lockdown.  Alton Police responded and found the victim and Thomas, along with a backpack that contained the weapon used in the crime.  Police believe Thomas fired shots outside the passenger window of a passing vehicle in the direction of the school and the victim.  Thomas will have to serve at least 85-percent of the 22-year sentence.
