A Granite City man will spend the next 55 years in prison for the murder of another man two years ago. 25 year old Caleb Bailey was convicted of first degree murder in the death of 43 year old Travis Mayes on May 18, 2014 in Granite City. Bailey shot and killed Mayes following a dispute over a woman.
Authorities discovered the body of Mayes next to his motorcycle on a parking lot in the 4700 block of Nameoki Road in Granite City in the early morning. Initial reports were that he was the victim of a traffic accident, but the investigation showed Mayes was shot one time in the head. Madison County Sheriff's Department Detectives discovered that Mayes and Bailey had an ongoing dispute over a female and Bailey tracked down Mayes to a bar earlier in the evening. He followed Mayes when he left and shot him on the parking lot where he died. Bailey will serve his entire sentence, 30 years for the murder, and 25 years for the use of a firearm in the murder.
