A Cottage Hills man will spend three years in jail after he duped unsuspecting customers into buying Boy Scout Popcorn. Authorities say 31-year-old Jakob Bottoms even used an actual scout who joined him during the sales, although the boy did not know about Bottoms scheme.
Bottoms pleaded guilty in Madison County Court to theft under $500, after several customers complained to police when they did not receive their popcorn. Bottoms made several of those sales in Collinsville, and eight customers reported never receiving any popcorn several weeks after they made their purchases. Some of the customers even wrote directly to Bottoms who told them he’d later write one check to the scouts. Officials with the Boy Scouts cooperated with the investigation. Bottoms had previous convictions for theft, burglary and drug charges.
